The ORDC’s September general members’ meeting welcomed speakers Wesley Wilcox, Marion County Supervisor of Elections, and Brian Donnelly, write-in candidate for District 4 County Commissioner.

Mr. Donnelly’s presentation revolved around protecting Marion County from unwanted growth, infrastructure concerns and business expansion. Voters throughout Marion County were encouraged to write his name on their ballots.

Mr. Wilcox presented a clear explanation of the workings of the Marion County Election system. He also fielded questions concerning voting integrity and election (poll) worker and poll watcher individual tasks and restrictions.

An additional business matter was the review of the present club budget and its donation support to candidates D. Hawkes and V. Demmings.

For its October meeting, the ORDC will welcome Naomi Blemur, candidate for Florida Agriculture Commissioner, to replace outgoing Nikki Fried. Besides her prepared comments, Ms. Blemur will also be available to answer questions from the membership.

The October meeting is Oct. 20, 7 p.m., at Oak Run’s Orchid Club. All Oak Run progressives, Democrats and non-affiliated neighbors are welcome to the monthly general meetings. Membership in the club is not mandatory to attend.

If a visitor wants to join the ORDC, annual dues will be $7.00, effective January 2023. Paying club membership has increased 60 percent within the year. This is due in part to the club’s outreach program, the welcoming progressive-oriented environment, and the precinct-centered website providing election and issue information.

All Oak Run Progressives are welcome to register to this website, https:// precinct4120a.community site.com.

We will have our next Oak Run Republican Club meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 28, from 2:00-3:30 p.m. at the Palm Grove Auditorium in Oak Run.

Our keynote speaker is Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods. Come hear his plans for the Sheriff’s Office, his update on crime problem areas in the County that affect us and ways Oak Runners can be on the alert for ourselves and our community

We’ve all gotten our proposed tax bills. One of the items on the ballot in the Nov. 8 General Election is a continuation of the 1 mil tax for the next four years subsidizing the School Board. Our own Bob Schmidt will address this issue.

Voting is one of our rights as citizens of this great land. If you recently moved to Florida, you have until Oct. 11 to register

We meet on the last Wednesday of every month in the Palm Grove Auditorium. Come early to partake in 50/50, refreshments, and converse with other members. Although they aren’t due until January, we are accepting 2023 membership dues of $7.00, payable at the front desk when you arrive at the meeting.

Since we are a gated community, only members can invite guests to our meetings. Call Pete Fraleigh at 845-867-6262 or John Prosch at 507-779-5987 if you have any questions.

A Pilates class is held Tuesdays at 8 a.m. at Palm Grove Fitness Center with a certified instructor. There is a fee for this class.

Pilates is an innovative and safe system of exercise using a floor mat or a variety of equipment. The Acoustic Jam Club meets each Thursday, 3-5 p.m., at Oak Run’s Orchid Club. 6-10 players normally show up for each session. New members are always welcome. And, there are no dues.

All that is asked is that a person have some ability singing and/or playing an acoustic instrument, whether guitar, banjo, mandolin, various percussion instruments, etc.

The basic structure is that for the first three Thursdays of each month, a set group of songs are performed. This provides the ability to sing and/or play with the entire group. The last hour of those days are open to group play that is not part of the prescribed set.

The fourth Thursday allows for individual choice to play either solo or with backup by those others sitting in.

For the fixed monthly set, copies of lyrics and chords are usually available to new attendees. For more information contact Irv Becker at irv.becker@icloud.com or at 816-809-7668.
